Sepsis in Pediatric Patients

Sepsis is a common cause of acute decompensation in pediatrics. Recognizing pediatric sepsis early is crucial to delivering lifesaving interventions. We will explore the Phoenix Sepsis Score, which is more widely applicable to all hospitals, including our rural communities. Additionally, we will discuss common pitfalls in pediatric sepsis management and highlight high-risk populations, including febrile neonates. Join us to enhance your skills in this critical area of pediatric care.
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:
- Identify how to recognize and manage pediatric sepsis quickly
- Review the Phoenix Sepsis Score
- Explore potential pitfalls of pediatric sepsis care
- Consider high-risk pediatric populations
- Discuss how pediatric sepsis is unique compared to adult sepsis

FACULTY: Kyra Frost, MD
Kyra Frost, MD, is a third-year Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellow. She studied at the University of McGovern Medical School at the University of Houston Health Science Center in Houston, TX, completed training at Phoenix Children’s Hospital in Phoenix, AZ, and decided to continue her fellowship training at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Her academic interests include simulation and medical education.
FACILITATOR: Tina Tobler, MD
Dr. Tobler is originally from Los Angeles, CA. She attended St. Louis University for medical school and completed her pediatric residency at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. She then completed her pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at St. Louis Children's Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. Dr. Tobler joined Phoenix Children's Hospital July of 2013. She is also currently the chair of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Committee of the AzAAP. Her interests include medical education and injury prevention.
